A Goldwork Guild Meeting was held at Horncastle College on
Sunday 20th March. Approximately 24 were present, which was very
encouraging. Everyone had been asked to bring along a sample of work and
these were arranged on one side of the room to make a display. It was
interesting to note that where the same design had been worked, all pieces were
still highly individual, as they had been worked in different colours and the
workers' all had their own technique and style. Janice presented a brief slide show on the history of Goldwork Embroidery and then set everyone a challenge; to work petals in various designs i.e. rose petals, daisy petals etc. using smooth purl and heck purl in different shades. This kept everyone quiet for some time! But again it was interesting to see the wide variety of results. Janice had also brought along a range of supplies, including threads of all description and colour, tools, accessories and books, and her husband, Colin Squire was kept very busy as frenzied purchasing ensued! During the afternoon Janice took the time to speak to everyone on an individual basis to enquire where their interest lay in goldwork and to take note for future reference. The afternoon finished off with Janice looking at all the pieces of work that were on display and making wonderfully constructive and encouraging comments about them all. Janice is an extremely interesting person and there is no question as to her skills and helpfulness. As a final gesture, she presented a bouquet of flowers to Brenda Scarman who had organised the event, and Brenda in turn thanked Janice and Colin for travelling over from Gloucestershire to attend. It was a lovely end to a really great afternoon and once again our sincere thanks go to Brenda for getting the whole thing organised and to our guests, Janice Williams and Colin Squire.
