The pieces portrayed are varied, some familiar, but from widespread venues. It reinforced the idea that people need to get out and look at real items, but the book is useful in providing details of where to find things and help you decide what to study. Full of historic facts to the way work was produced, by whom and also circumstances surrounding the piece. THE BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO BRAIDING. The Craft of Kumihimo Very clearly load out, starting with materials and progressing to equipment. All the braids are worked on a marudai but a card is sufficient for the beginner, The silk threads can be replaced with metal yarn, but may require some trial and error. EMBROIDERIES AT DURHAM CATHEDRAL The enlargement of the end of the maniple of St. Cuthbert, featuring John the Baptist, on the front of this book makes it worthwhile having. EMBROIDERIES AT LIVERPOOL CATHEDRAL Another informative and small slim line book, sold in the Cathedral. Well illustrated and gives useful advice on storage; also biographies of some of the most important contributors to the designers and makers of ecclesiastical embroidery of the time. ENGLISH CHURCH EMBROIDERY 1833 - 1953 The illustrations alone make it worth buying. As a paperback it is not cheap and its size makes you wonder if it is value for money. Packed full of information on designers of the time, firms and amateurs that carried out the work, including references to convents, guilds and secular schools. It is Victorian in style, not a Twenty-First Century pattern book.
GOLDWORK Revised & Expanded Edition 50 page soft cover book providing a very good introduction to goldwork. Contains interesting illustrations of samples, completed work and useful diagrams a beginner can follow, and also inspire the more experienced. Also a small section devoted to jewels, beads and stones, a brief history, techniques, preparation & finishing, threads and reference to Church embroidery.
METAL THREAD EMBROIDERY Tools, Materials and Techniques Contains 250 coloured illustrations, over 200 pages. Arranged like a dictionary under three subheadings of the title. Invaluable for the student who has taken the first few steps on the ladder of the use of goldwork.
NEW IDEAS IN GOLDWORK A different approach to gold work makes this book both refreshing and inspiring. High standard of photography. A book to ponder, consider and take ideas from; a stepping stone for ideas and a useful addition to the bookshelf.
